Taglines are powerful communication tools for your brand. They must be personalized and customized to fit your individual company and add to your brand identity. A tagline is a highly focused and brief phrase that clearly explains and defines the benefit of a product or service to the consumer in a meaningful and memorable way. Although often confused, a tagline is not a slogan. Slogans change with the advertising campaigns, and a tagline remains virtually static for many years.
Your tagline explains your unique selling proposition and differentiates you from your competitors. Some well-known taglines are Burger King – Have it your way, Chevy Trucks – Like a rock and probably the most talked about tagline is Nike – Just do it. These are all memorable taglines and have a personality all its own. They connect with the consumer at an emotional level, which is what makes their message memorable.
If you have had a tagline for a number of years and it works, by all means don’t change it. However, if you feel that your tagline does not fit in today’s market, it may be time to update it. There is something to be said for refreshing a tagline, but like a company’s visual identity, a tagline should have some staying power at least until there is a good business reason to support the change.
